Houses in Stapleton, a large residential development in Denver, reflect a cultural desire to combine uniqueness and coherence, individual expression and anonymity, personal ownership and broad market appeal. Single family homes are designed to be simultaneously one-of-a-kind and consistent with other houses in each neighborhood. By contrast, the development’s row homes are identical.

This project proposes a third customization strategy. Houses’ features are coordinated across an entire block, including each house being a different color in a continuously changing elevation and a progressively shifting proportion of space for the living room and outdoor deck.
